If you’ve noticed I’ve spent a significant amount of time in Mexico this year – particularly so right outside of Cancun in Playa Mujeres to help my little sister plan her wedding. I’m happy to report that the wedding was a celebration of epic proportion and will be shared on the blog in the upcoming month or so with a survival guide for how to maintain your sanity while planning your little sister’s wedding (kidding, kidding!) But really, all the fun wedding details will be here soon!
Though one thing everyone should keep in mind when being a part of a destination wedding in any form is that you need to extend the trip by at least a day or so to allow yourself to recover and no I don’t just mean from that champagne headache you’re likely going to have come Sunday from dancing on the tables with the happy couple until the wee hours of the morning but I mean just from all of the activities happening around their big day!
Instead of heading to the tourist filled area of Cancun I teamed up with Strong Travel to check out the luxurious and intoxicating Nizuc Resort that I can only describe as an absolute gem of a secluded resort in the middle of the sheer madness that Cancun typically is known for. I try to steer clear of touristy anything and was afraid we wouldn’t have much of a choice but this beautiful place was just what the post wedding craziness called for.
Nizuc’s secludedness was it’s biggest appeal until we arrived. The property sits on 29-acres that was previously a private Mexican presidential retreat – how cool is that? It’s literally tucked back into Punta Nizuc, which is on the southern tip of Cancun’s “famous” hotel zone – typically a place where I avoid but this was different. Then add in the two private beaches and its jaw-droppingly beautiful infinity pool (with a swim up bar no less) and you’re a goner asking yourself how you managed to miss this on previous trips.
In one word? Tranquil. We checked in and were whisked off to our room (with one heck of a view!) by a speedy guy on a golf cart. Bags dropped. Swimsuits on and we were off again to check out the pool scene. To my surprise their two pools were equally as lovely as the other but for me La Punta, their adults only pool was the winner.
We opted to explore and walk around the grounds to get their but once you find yourself walking through the mini maze you find yourself in an idyllic setting at the adults-only pool and beach where delicious cocktails and snacks are delivered at your desire and full relaxation mode sets in. The resort’s private beaches by the mangroves are also home to a number of large iguanas who have no fear in coming pretty close to you but they’re harmless little guys. The pristine shallow waters allow you to likely spot vibrant orange starfish, beautiful blue fish and so much more.
Total and complete zen mode.
And the staff? I’ve never experienced such a warm, welcoming staff – especially in Mexico. Every time we walked up or passed by the staff welcomed us with a hand over their heart.
The experience offerings at the resort are quite extensive. There is snorkeling at no additional cost which was lovely. I went out on a private tour off the coast of the property and snorkeled beneath the Caribbean Sea meeting the likes of sea turtles, star fish and octopuses frequently. Oh and a tiny little shark too – which will go down as one of the few non freak out moments of my life when encountering such a little beast.
We also took a few spins on the paddleboards offered on the property. It was my mom’s first time and it was such a blast. There was no time limit, no rush, nothing, the guys just let us go and it could not have been a more fun experience with my mom!
We had a serene large room with a balcony overlooking the sandy private beach of the resort. The oversized bed was hard to leave but with the views and the activities I spent very little time in the room, though we did have room service one evening out on the balcony. After 10+ days of food in Mexico it really is no surprise that I went for the burger and fries, to my delight it was delicious. And did I mention that the bathroom was the size of my NYC apartment with a beautiful standalone bathtub and a closet bigger than Carrie Bradshaw’s? Needless to say it was heavenly.
